An army cadet acts as baby-sitter to a mischievous, blind captain on a week-long trip from Turin to Naples. The angry captain, wants no pity, wreaks havoc in every situation, nicknames the cadet Cuccio (Babyfat), and spends the next few days ordering him about, behaving badly in public and making a scene everywhere they go. Somewhat overlooked since Al Pacino's Oscar-winning remake, Dino Risi's twice-nominated adaptation of Giovanni Arpino's novel boasts a similarly show-stopping performance from Vittorio Gassman. He won the best actor prize at Cannes for his portrayal of the blind army captain with a stubborn streak to match his simmering sense of resentment. However, that's where the similarities end, as Gassman journeys from Turin to Naples to enter into a suicide pact with a soldier disfigured in the accident that disabled him. There's sly humour in his relationship with rookie escort Alessandro Momo, but the romantic reunion with Agostina Belli is cringingly sentimental.

Sentimental drama showcasing a flamboyant over-the-top performance from Pacino.
In my book, maybe controversially, Al Pacino's best film. He acts the world off the stage, you can do nothing but believe he is blind. The whole cast of this film are excellent and the direction perfect. There is some strong language in the film, please don't let that put you off. The language used is part of Al Pacino's character and is only used when necessary for the character to express himself. A warm film with a solid story line and memorable moments. A must for any film fan, Al Pacino or not!
To be totally honest 4 is a bit stingy because it's definately a must watch but it has to be an all time classic to warrant 5 stars in my book.Pacino plays a recently blinded ex-army man who wishes to do one last tour of his fave things and places before he dies.He also decides he needs an aide to carry this out and that is where O'Donnell comes in.A very moving story about friendship and loyalty in the face of fear and authority. You just have to see this!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and so did my mother, who will not admit to enjoying anything in life.
Of course Al Pacino is superb as the rude, arrogant, suicidal blind ex-army guy. Who certainly makes life very difficult and exciting for his new carer Chris O' Donell, including the drive of a lifetime in a new Ferrari driven by the blind Pacino.
A very up-lifting film and very funny but it's no comedy. It is certainly inspirational and I at the end had a lot more respect for the actors involved, baring in mind that O' Donnel was an unknown when I watched the film.
Quite simply one of the greatest movies ever made. Al Pacino's role in this film is a marvel. This is a must see movie.
This is the most inspiring, powerful, exciting and beautiful film I have ever seen.
Al Pacino rips his heart out and shows us exactly why he is considered the greatest actor on earth. His thunderous volcanic inner power is perfect for the character of Colonel Frank Slade and when he lets rip, you will feel the whole world shake.
Colonel Slade decides to experience the most exciting weekend of his life before he blows his brains out. The story centers around his father-like relationship with a public school student, the amazing time they have in New York City, and how they both ultimately save each others life.
Charlie, the student, attends a very upper class, pretentious, elitest and arragant public school that is unfairly threatening to expell him... that is until Colonal Frank Slade turns up and gives the most awe-inspiring, magnifiscent and powerful speech ever recorded and it will make you want to jump up and down on your sofa and CHEER!!!!!
It's a beautiful film and will make you feel ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The film draws tension between a student who is torn between duty and personal career and a blind ex-serviceman (high ranking officer) who is trying to end it all. The interplay between the two of them is intriguing and leaves you guessing as to what is going to happen.
A good comment on social behaviour I would recommend this film to anyone. (Possibly even the best film I have ever seen).

This film is very under rated, but it is fantastic. Al Pacino plays a blind ex service man who has lost the will to live and plans to end it all after a weekend on excess in New York. Chris O'Donnell plays the unsuspecting student who is hired to escort him. The contrast between the cynical older guy and the optimistic enthusiasm of youth is so well portrayed and if you didn't know Al Pacino, you would be forgiven for thinking that he is actually blind. I couldn't take my eyes off him the whole film. The tango scene is just sublime.
I'm a huge fan of Al Pacino, and had heard great things about this film - not least that he won an Oscar for his performance. However, I found both the film and his acting surprisingly tedious and one-note. Most of the other characters were quite one-dimensional, particularly the family group during the Thanksgiving dinner scene and the conniving headmaster. I thought Chris O'Donnell was quite endearing in his cluelessness, but didn't really believe in his relationship with Frank and though that the ending was quite excruciating. I also found the women in the film to be, basically, passive cupcakes who roll over just because a man identifies their perfume. All in all, I thought this was a very unconvincing and sentimental drama, with a leading performance that, I think, should have been reigned in by the director. The tango scene was great, though.
This film is well worth watching Mr.pacino is excellent, Top story line
Top acting from everyone.
i think pacino got an oscar for this one. while i'm not saying this is necessarily his best piece, i won't beef anyone who does. def worth a watch!
