SCHOOL OF ROCK is a hilarious romp that parents will enjoy as much as their children. Jack Black stars as Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star who doesn't seem to be rocking much of anything these days. Kicked out of the band that he started and about to be kicked out of his apartment, Dewey pretends that he's his roommate Ned .. Read more

Boisterous, amiable comedy in an old-fashioned 'let's put on a show' style, enlivened by a few modern twists.

More than adequate if unmemorable family pleasing comedy.

After being booted out of his band for his old-school exuberance, layabout axeman Dewey Finn (Jack Black) tries to scrape some cash together by passing himself off as a teacher to a class of industrious ten year olds at a prestigious school. It's there he has the crazy idea to enter the upcoming Battle of the Bands with a new band formed from his class. While this family comedy hits all of the usual 'believe in yourself' and 'hard work pays off' touchstones it succeeds in being amusing and entertaining throughout. Director Richard Linklater ekes a great performance from the cast of children who never seem precocious despite their prodigious talent, and that's probably its trump card. Jack Black plays the same role as he usually does, an over-the-top Spinal Tap refugee but manages to keep well to the right side of the funny/irritating divide. It's only real failing is it's lack of any particularly memorable gags, so the laughter is unlikely to follow you out of the cinema on the trip home. Still, an above average family comedy that ought to keep kids and parents alike amused.

Jack Black worked in the porn industry (3.5 stars)

Jack Black doesn't have an affinity with children - he IS a child, albeit one suffering from some serious bouts of ADD. This movie works really well - even against the grain of a play-it-by-numbers-underdog-wins-all plotline. It all hangs together like a cheap necklace, whimsical, flashy, and stupid - but funny enough to be forgiven.

Even uplifting - if in a very predictable way.

    Good fun evening's entertainment

After watching this twice it still made me laugh out loud. A very funny film, especially as an aging rocker, I found all the rock references hilarious.

I would call this the rocker's equivalent of 'Sister Act', where a singer/songwriter with not the greatest talent lands himself a job as a substitute teacher. With no teaching knowledge he teaches them the only thing he knows, how to form a rock band!

Although, Jack Black shines amongst the talented child cast, there is a wonderful perfomance from Joan Cusack as a stressed, and harrassed head teacher.

Good fun for all the family.

    superb.....................

my teenage son loved this dvd. Dewey Finn is a 30-something slacker with aspirations of being in a successful rock band, but who can't seem to make it happen.

His latest band mates have just kicked him out, so he spends his time sleeping and eating, until he intercepts a phone call meant for his roommate Ned, who works as a substitute teacher.

When he finds out how much the job pays, he decides to fake his way into it, intending to slack off some more and pick up a pay cheque.

Then he happens to catch the students at band practice, and discovers that his perfect rock band might be sitting right under his nose.

I will not tell you what happens next, because it will spoil your enjoyment of the film. what i can say, is that it is well worth watching.

Funny, but not as much as I'd expected. The film felt a bit too sedentary when contrasted with Jack Blacks spontaneous randomness. He puts in a brilliant performance, carrying off both nutty and sincere with aplomb, a talented actor, I simply feel that he has been let down by poor directing as the film rarely has a great deal of impetus, and if it wasn't for Black's infectious enthusiasm, i would've been in danger of slumber. A good film, worth a rent, big things in the future for JB, i hope.

    Horrible

Absolutely the worst film I have ever had the displeasure of sitting through. Jack Black is an objectionable little fatso at the best of times. In this film he is so so punchable I found myself wanting him to be killed fairly early on.

The plot is totally ridiculous. All of the characters, including the children, are devoid of any appeal whatsoever. However, you could forgive all of these things if the film was actually funny, but it isn't. I didn't even smile. Not once. How this won that BAFTA over Shaun of the Dead, I have no idea. People must be really stupid.

    School of c...!!

Absolute rubbish. Had to watch it as the kids thought it good.

That's the only age range it would appeal to.

    Sister Act, with a twist...

well you've got be inspired by his enthusiasm.. this is basically 'Sister Act' updated with rock music.. whatever that is.. amusing in parts, and the kids are indeed great.. but not enough to actually keep me awake to the finale, which my girlfriend assures me was worth the wait? so enjoyable family fun, if that?s what your looking for,.. just don?t expect anything too ?edgy? or ironic from Mr Black this time..

School of Rock rocks! - Jack Black is in his absolute element and I suspect was allowed to do his own thing to a certain degree (Tenacious D fans will know what I mean) . There is good comedy and awesome tunes. A great laugh for all family. It's a bit like sister act mixed with Rock Star (mark wahberg) - watch it!!
