LOVEFiLM Review Scream 4

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Wes Craven's horror franchise returns eleven years after the last instalment. Does it serve up the scares of the original?

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Scream movies were never very good, but Scream 4 is certainly scraping the barrell. The stories have all been done and now all the viewer is left with is boredom! Please STOP making these crappy slasher films, otherwise I will have to keep watching them. Like the lure of watching an accident happen, I keep watching Scream hoping at least one of them will be original and even remotely entertaining, but it has yet to happen.

  • Something for the fans

Being a fan of the scream franchise the fourth instalment had a lot to do to best its predecessors. (the third scream film not included) although not a lot different to the storyline of the other films, tries to revamp its self by adding fresh faced teenagers as its victims, though still remaining true to the originals with the core cast members in tow. It is evident that this film was made a money spinner and a 'something for the fans' kind of film with clever quips and favourite one liners from the franchise. Its the film that brings all the films together in the typical comedy horror slasher movie style.

This is very much like the other scream films. There is nothing original about this film- its exactly the same as the others!

  • Good Scream film: can't go wrong.

If you liked the first three then you'll like this. If you didn't like the other three then you probably wouldn't watch this anyway. This does what a Scream film should do: makes you jump, guess, laugh and scream!!!

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

May contain mildest of mild spoilers...

I didn't have massively high expectations for Scream 4 having been unimpressed by the third film and generally being suspicious of belated revivals of film franchises years after they end.

All things considered, it was just about OK.

For the gorehounds out there, the deaths are pleasingly gory I guess, but probably relatively tame by more recent standards. What was really lacking was any real surprises or scares.

Apart from a clever, kind of double-rug-pull opener, it was all prettymuch run-of-the-mill. The theme of/references to remakes and reboots kind of felt like an excuse to rehash the original film. When the final twist comes around, none of it will be any massive surprise to anyone who's seen the previous Scream films. Having expected the film to run a little longer than it did after the main revelation, I was left with a distict feeling of 'oh, is that it?'.

Generally, given that Scream itself was a spoof to a certain extent, and it's been sequelled/spoofed itself ad-infinitum, the whole scary phone call, 'what's your favourite scary movie??' routine just feels a bit passe now.

It's an easy, undemanding way to kill (pardon the pun) a couple of hours and probably worth a go if, like me, you've seen all the others and thought you might as well see this one, but you may well be left wondering if there was any point in it really!
