Resembling a less atmospheric hybrid of Alien and The Thing, this dingy adaptation of Philip K Dick's short story Second Variety is only a moderate success. Peter Weller (RoboCop) plays the soldier attempting to negotiate peace with his futuristic enemies, who comes up against the eponymous deadly defence units, which have evolved into increasingly sophisticated adversaries. Although there are decently mounted action sequences and the post-nuclear production design is nicely realised, there are far too many lulls in the story and, crucially, with the exception of Weller, it's difficult to care whether these underdeveloped characters live or die.
Paranoid science fiction, bleak in tone but interesting in its speculations about intelligent machines and violent people; judging by the soundtrack song, rock music will regress in the future.
If you like your Sci Fi with a bit of blood and gore then you'll enjoy Screamers.
A screamer is a small mechanical nasty that attacks and dismembers anyone who's not wearing a special tag.
Weller the star of the film give's a great performance, although there is the occassional cheesey line from some of the other cast members, Take these in your stride and enjoy a well made Sci Fi film with a cheaky little twist at the end.
This movie is good for one thing... cheap laughs.
It just isn't scary at all... if anything, the dialogue was dull, the acting was a little poor and you'll probably get bored within the first 20mins or so.
Something to watch when there's nothing else on or to do I guess.
