A fascinating documentary about an extraordinary artist
By Allue (4 reviews) from London , 26 Apr 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
I was absorbed by this documentary. While it can't cover everything in detail, it opens a window into Screamin' Jay Hawkins' life. A fascinating perspective on this extraordinary artist and his ecclectic mish mash of styles, his era, his life, background and what shaped him. The artists who knew Screamin' Jay, a colourful array of uniquely talented people, give soulful insights and anecdotal stories about his artistry, the man, paradoxes, how he was perceived, and the social and cultural issues he faced. The highs/lows and Screamin' Jays own accounts of mob run labels and rip offs to time served in the Korean War are equally incredulous, heartbreaking and funny. An informative, quirky, delightful and moving documentary that stayed with me long after the dvd was returned.- Was this review helpful to you?
