    [Highly rated reviewer]

Giving a brief overview of many of the diverse bands of the Icelandic music scene Screaming Masterpiece focuses on performance footage interspaced with short but informative interviews with band members. What comes through very strongly is that there is a real sense of community between the groups. If you're a fan of Bjork & find the likes of Sigur Ros intriguing then this documentary is a great introduction to a handful of other bands that create innovative, powerful music.

I loved the visuals, but despite the claims of the film, the music is not that different from anywhere else, even the traditional pieces. Maybe that is a good thing - saying something good about the universality of the human condition.

The North Atlantic island of Iceland is home to only 300,000 people, and according to this documentary, most of them are all in a band. That such a tiny population should spawn so many musicians is hardly explored. But the wide diversity of music is, most of it strangely mesmerising, to the extent that the film has a vaguely hypnotic feel to it. Naturally Icelandic superstar Bjork features heavily in her eccentric way.

If you're looking for a Bjork or Sigur Ros live DVD, this is not it.

If you're looking for an in-depth examination of either of those acts, this is not it.

This is a brillaintly made documentary about the history of Icelandic popular music. Yes, there's some exclusive live footage from those 2. There's also contributions from Bang Gang, Slow Blow, Mum, Minus and many more great acts.

If that sounds your cup of tea, then drink up and enjoy.
