J.D. is "top gun" in the eyes of Dr. Kelso until a fellow medical student, turned intern, Nick Murdoch walked into the picture. J.D. suddenly perceives himself as inferior to Nick, who always has a positive attitude, knows all the answers to Dr. Kelso's random medical questions, exhibits great rapport with the nurses and displays an impeccable bedside manner with his patients. To top it off, Elliot has developed a crush on him. After a brief, but unnerving talk with Dr. Kelso, J.D. realizes that a great leader such as Nick creates a strong team behind him. It's not long before Nick breaks down, unable to handle the pressures of constantly maintaining a positive outlook, when his 7-year-old patient, Peter, doesn't improve and Nick succumbs to the fact that Peter will eventually die. Nick quits and leaves the hospital. As Dr. Kelso cleans out Nick's locker, he hands the torch back to J.D. who resumes his position as top intern.
