After finishing their first year as medical interns, J.D., Elliot and Turk move up the medical hierarchy and eagerly await the arrival of new medical students to do their dirty work. J.D. is assigned to supervise Josh, a young medical student who reminds J.D. of himself. With visions of being a noble mentor, J.D. happily instructs Josh on his daily duties but soon realizes that Josh's insecurity prevents him from performing even the simplest of procedures. J.D becomes frustrated with Josh's ineptitude and ultimately finds himself working several more hours to fix Josh's mistakes. The next day, Josh approaches J.D. for advice on how to survive his first days at the hospital, but instead gets chastised by J.D. for being incompetent. That afternoon, Josh quits and leaves the hospital. Upset by J.D.'s treatment of Josh, Nurse Roberts and Carla remind J.D. how tough it was when he first started as a medical student. J.D., riddled with guilt finally persuades Josh to return to the hospital.
