A young Ray Winstone showing his talent as a hard man

This film shows it's age but that's what makes it so enthralling, in that it is a time capsule for attitudes (and haircuts) in the 70's.

It is predominantly plotted around Winstone's character in a borstal (or juvenile prison to the uninitiated). However it also includes the different attitudes and experiences of several other inmates, to the extent that you feel empathy for many, due to their interaction with the wardens, most of which involves bullying and violence and a severe lack of listening skills.

You'd like to think the system has changed, otherwise we are churning out some twisted individuals.

    Excellent

This is the best prison drama I have seen. Although it's dated and political climates have changed since it's original release human nature is still fundamentally the same. This film demonstrates the violent extremes people will go to for survival or simply for pleasure. Realistic and gritty. It runs almost like a documentary.
