A Definite Winner
By Vanessa from Blackburn , 29 Apr 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
What a tearjerker! Unless you knew that this was a true story, you would have thought that this was just Hollywood throwing in all the cliches. An old timer, a businessman down on his luck, a boy with a disability and a mistreated horse. But, it's all true. And you don't have to be into racing to enjoy it. This is a real feel good movie, that avoids being overly-sentimental, and captures the inter-war period of America perfectly.- Was this review helpful to you?

Like eating someone else's sick.
By ghostsmut (20 reviews) from Edinburgh , 05 Dec 2012Cloying and sickly film about how a nearly-broken horse winning races during the Great Depression healed America on its own. Two and a bit hours long where you could have skipped 30 minutes of the characters introductions. It's edited like an epileptic fit and so ghastly I can't believe I didn't smash my eyes out. Worse is the self-important, grandiose and badly delivered voiceover that stitches the whole thing together. Like it wants to be the Shawshank Redemption but instead of Morgan Freeman they got Bill O'Reilly. The film has the emotional impact of a Cabbage Patch Doll. Any redeeming features? Yes. The bit where Elizabeth Banks shouts 'Come on biscuit!' which reminds me of my favourite drinking game.- Was this review helpful to you?
