Have been waiting to see this since it was first made and rejected for a BAFTA award.

Was the rejection because it was Scottish and in Gaelic to boot rather than in American English?

Excellent photography, acting and direction..Showed the art and traditions of the storyteller which still survive in the Islands - especially the Gaelic speaking Western Isles today. Worth watching if only to see young actors making their debuts. Hope we'll see more like this!

there is something moving in this account of how different generations and parts of a family try to make sense of their grief and loss... in what therapists might think of as a transposition of developmental coping strategies it is the older generation who rely on the stories and the younger generation who place an insistence on truth, but at what cost? with some stunning shots of the truly magnificent mountain ranges of skye, the lyrical gaelic provides a great linguistic medium for the story-telling and the child actors manage to convey a convincing enough portrayal of those displaced by their loss to engage.

A beautiful film in the vernacular language. How wonderful. People should open their mind about watching films in Gaelic, perhaps the next scottish film could be in Scots.

The Isle of Skye is the most beautiful part of the UK but you would remain ignorant of this if this is all you had ever seen. When presented with the most stunning of landscapes why is it de rigeur to employ intoxicated fidgets as cameramen? 2 stars given because of the great comedy within 'MacDonald and The Spaniard' but I think this would be lost on all but 60 000 of the UK who understand the difference between marag and maraca.

This is a great film, atmospheric, wonderful scenery and well acted. It follows the Gaelic tradition of storytelling in a modern setting, and explores the issue of people living in remote communities and whether they can ever truly abandon their roots. It also helps to preserve a struggling language, that once lost would never be recovered. If you like this film there are other gaelic programmes on BBC Alba which is available on the web,
