Now, here's a few interesting connections: George Axelrod wrote The Seven Year Itch which Billy Wilder directed and which almost starred Walter Matthau. Then Wilder made Kiss Me, Stupid, a rasping comedy in which a housewife and a hooker swap roles in order to charm a recording star. Now to The Secret Life of an American Wife, in which Anne Jackson plays a housewife who, thinking she's lost her sexual charm, impersonates a hooker and sets out to seduce a big movie star, Matthau — whose agent happens to be Jackson's husband. While the playing is a constant delight, the sets are like amateur rep and the dialogue, thought to be very risque in 1968, will seem very dated indeed.
This is a seminal series - excellent writing, excellent acting and lots of fresh directional ideas. I thoroughly enjoyed it when it previewed at some God forsaken hour on Channel 4, and it stood up very well to a second dvd viewing. It's sort of like an Australian 'This Life', except everyone's a bit less miserable (probably because they get to see the sun more than once a year). Sometimes the voice over is a bit hammy (think Carrie at the end of SATC) but on the whole this is one of the most astutely observed dramas I've seen in years. Please Channel 4 buy in Series 2 and 3!
