What an excellent film. This is the second Mike Leigh film that I've watched and am so impressed with the way he pulls off making down-to-earth real-life dramas that pack a punch. Timothy Spall is the star for me (as always) and Brenda Blethyn acts her part to perfection in this gritty story about families, feuds and fracas.

  • Unbelievably overrated

Patronising, overly worthy and dull. If it didn't have Mike leigh's name on it, you'd imagine it was a nightmarishly long Eastenders episode. But without the laughs.

Coming from a working class background I found Brenda Blethyn's character genuinely nauseating.

  • Good film, but too slow!

Overall, I think this is a great film, and highlights a very emotional subject.

There are some brilliant actors in it, and I think the best performances has to be from Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Brenda Blethyn.

Although I do find the film very slow, too slow. Some of the scenes work by going slowly, but it certainly isn't needed for many scenes. The scene in the living room where they are all crying, i find very over-the-top, but maybe this makes it more realistic.

I also find the ending slightly instant, but after a while, I realised this was the best way for it to end.

  • Brilliant but not 'hilarious'.

I would agree that this is a thoroughly thought-provoking, enjoyable, moving and gritty film, as you would expect from Mike Leigh. My only gripe is with the word 'hilarious' used in the general 'blurb' about the film. Yes, it made me smile and occasionally laugh, but to call it 'hilarious' is, I think, misleading. If you are in the mood for a good laugh, this isn't the film to do it for you.

Superb acting all round makes this a very watchable film, while tackling several issues. Very human and identifiable.
