Most helpful review
5 Stars

What an excellent film. This is the second Mike Leigh film that I've watched and am so impressed with the way he pulls off making down-to-earth real-life dramas that pack a punch. Timothy Spall is the star for me (as always) and Brenda Blethyn acts her part to perfection in this gritty story about families, feuds and fracas.- Was this review helpful to you?

(76)Unbelievably overrated
By a customer from Leeds , 10 Jan 2011Patronising, overly worthy and dull. If it didn't have Mike leigh's name on it, you'd imagine it was a nightmarishly long Eastenders episode. But without the laughs.
Coming from a working class background I found Brenda Blethyn's character genuinely nauseating.- Was this review helpful to you?

Brilliant but not 'hilarious'.
By a customer from Welshpool , 22 Sep 2009I would agree that this is a thoroughly thought-provoking, enjoyable, moving and gritty film, as you would expect from Mike Leigh. My only gripe is with the word 'hilarious' used in the general 'blurb' about the film. Yes, it made me smile and occasionally laugh, but to call it 'hilarious' is, I think, misleading. If you are in the mood for a good laugh, this isn't the film to do it for you.- Was this review helpful to you?

Secrets and Lies
By a customer from Southampton , 15 Sep 2009Superb acting all round makes this a very watchable film, while tackling several issues. Very human and identifiable.- Was this review helpful to you?
