I felt that after 4 episodes that I got the joke and didn't need to see anymore.People have praised this show for years but I really couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
Yep definitely a classic comedy for years to come. The writings as tight as Fawlty Towers (as high a compliment as you can get in my book). For me this series marked the beginning for US comedy Cheers was OK, but it still had that high-minded self-importance of old American sitcoms. Seinfeld was a real breath of fresh air from across the pond this in the day of Britcom drivel like Mrs Bouquet et al. The Yanks finally learnt not to take themselves so seriously, hence Frasier, Larry Sanders, even the Simpsons and South Park. It is to the BBCs mortal shame that this show, with its British style observational humour, was never given better than the graveyard slot near midnight.
The DVDs a bit fiddly to work, so it may be worth setting aside a couple of hours to view it all in one (you seem to have to fast forward through the 1st show before the menu appears for the remainder). Even though I love the show, the 20 minute episodes are also a real boon God forbid we ever get to the state of putting up with 10 mins of adverts every half an hour.
