    Comic Gold

The selfish adventures of Jerry, George, Elaine and Cosmo are to my mind the greatest sitcom series ever. The viciousness of the behaviour, the social acuity of the observations, the labyrinthe intricacy of the plotting made every 20 minute episode a pure joy. They were pretty much shelved into a midnight screening slot by the BBC over here so could never replicate their massive Stateside success. As such this DVD release may be the only way for newcomers to the show to find out what the fuss is all about.

A word of advice though. The first season really does seem clunky (Seinfeld himself observes on the disc it feels like a home movie) as the series did take time to develop it's pace. As such the first disc is really a curiousity piece for die-hard fans, as the actors are only just starting to develop their characters, and it's interesting to see the little changes that were necessary to turn the show into gold-dust. Therefore newcomers would be best off starting with the third season discs to get themselves hooked for life. That's where the show really starts hitting it's stride, never missing a beat for the rest of it's run. The sheer venality of the characters is still a breath of fresh air. Enjoy.

I want to like it but........

OK, let me start by saying that I missed the whole Seinfeld thing when it was first popular.

However I really rate Curb Your Enthusiasm which is written by (and stars) Larry David who co-wrote Seinfeld. So I thought I'd get some Seinfeld and I would love it right?

Well not really because I find Jerry Seinfeld seriously annoying when he does his little stand up routines during the episodes. If it wasn't for these excerpts of his stage act I would give it 4.5 stars. As it stands I give it 3 stars.

I guess I like Larry David more than the 'Star' of Seinfeld

    The greatest comedy series ever

The first five episodes from what was to become the greatest comedy series ever. As well as the 5 episodes this disk contains some very entertaining extras: for example, there's a 'yada, yada, yada' section in which Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld comment over 'The Stakeout' - the first proper Seinfeld episode - 'like a school play' according to its creator. There are lots of revealing insights as the series' creators point out parts of storlines which were taken from their own personal experience or explain why they decided to re-cast Jerry's father.

An absolute must for all Seinfeld fans.

Seinfeld set the standard for 90s comedy

Yep – definitely a classic comedy for years to come. The writing’s as tight as Fawlty Towers (as high a compliment as you can get in my book). For me this series marked the beginning for US comedy – Cheers was OK, but it still had that high-minded self-importance of old American sitcoms. Seinfeld was a real breath of fresh air from across the pond – this in the day of Britcom drivel like ‘Mrs Bouquet’ et al. The Yanks finally learnt not to take themselves so seriously, hence Frasier, Larry Sanders, even the Simpsons and South Park. It is to the BBC’s mortal shame that this show, with its British style observational humour, was never given better than the ‘graveyard’ slot near midnight.

The DVD’s a bit fiddly to work, so it may be worth setting aside a couple of hours to view it all in one (you seem to have to fast forward through the 1st show before the menu appears for the remainder). Even though I love the show, the 20 minute episodes are also a real boon – God forbid we ever get to the state of putting up with 10 mins of adverts every half an hour.

    Classic Seinfeld

If you miss Seinfeld on TV then this is a must. Seinfeld is one of my favourite shows. Some people loathe while others love it.

I watched it a few times before I swapped it for another. If you haven't seen Seinfeld give it a go. Lots of laughs and just enjoy!

    A classic never disappoints

Perhaps its because I'm American, but I think that Seinfeld is and always will be one of the greatest comedies of all time. It's nice to get to see some of the shows from the earlier years as well. Some nice extras along the way as well.

    Greatest Sitcom of all time

The early days of the greatest sitcom of all time. This shows the early evolution of the series. Most notable is the evolution of Kramer as Michael Richards takes him from a great character to a stand out character.

I don't usually like sit-coms because they tend to be dull, boring and repetitive but Seinfeld is one of a kind.

If you haven't seen seinfeld then rent this now. Too many people are unaware of this brilliant sitcom because the BBC shoved it into obscurity in the UK by placing it on at ridiculous times like 2am.

The DVD's are packed with extra features and there's a one and a half hour documentary on disc 4 about how the show began. There's also the 'notes about nothing' which act as subtitles in each episode but they describe various things of interest or go into extra detail about particular parts of an episode. Well worth checking out if you're an avid fan like me!
