Virtually unknown outside the Latino community, Selena Quintanilla was a major figure in Tejano music until, on the brink of her crossover into mainstream pop charts (à la Gloria Estefan) she was murdered by the president of her fan club. This glossy, slick and predictable biography centres on her relationship with her father, Abraham (Edward James Olmos), and her determination to hit the big time. Unsurprisingly, as Abraham is the executive producer, the film does not linger on her tragic death, but it provides a perfect vehicle for singer/actress Jennifer Lopez, who was nominated for a Golden Globe in the best actress in a musical category.
"...SELENA succeeds, through Lopez's performance, in evoking the magic of a sweet and talented young woman..."
"...Pleasant to watch....The movie's concert sequences have a fluency and bounce that match the music..."
Another poor outing for poor j-lo and alas she is not an exception.
The most important rule for films - EVER:
NEVER _EVER_ watch a film that has a singer as the leading actor/actress. There is a reason why they got into singing and not acting. As with most rules in life there are a couple of exceptions. Exceptional rule: It is OK to watch such a film if said actor/actress has been nominated or won an Oscar (obvious really...) Illustrious alumni include: Will Smith and Cher.
Surprisingly if you obey this rule you will be spared the most painful experiences you can ever have in front of your own TV. Surprisingly, it is OK to watch models turned actors/actresses. Reason? Well, models usually have no talent so they go into the role with no great expectations and carry it off. Unfortunately, singers believe that their talents must extend to acting and get it so wrong...
Obey the rule - live longer. Obey the rule - live happier.
My enjoyment of the film was in no way marred by the fact that I hadn't previously heard of Selena.
The film moved along at an enjoyable pace, if i had any critisism it is that Jennifer Lopez had to lip sync to one or two too many stage performances.
Selena was obviously talented and her murder a tragedy. This was a good if I suspect slightly rose tinted film
What's wrong with these other reviewers? I'd been looking forward to watching this film for years and when J-Lo was riding high, I couldn't understand why her breakthrough film was never shown on British T.V. Now I've seen it though, I can understand why! I read about Selena years ago in a magazine and was totally intrigued by the article, so when I heard there was a film of her life, I had to see it. I was expecting an insightful portrayal of the relationship between Selena and the best friend that ended up killing her but I knew something was wrong when an hour into the film, I still hadn't seen the 'best friend'. The dialogue was awful and the storyline is just the most terrible cliche-ridden fairytale, (without the happily-ever-after ending, of course). It's an utter cheese-fest with no depth whatsoever. I never read the synopsis of the film before I watched it because I didn't need to (it wouldn't have stopped me from watching it anyway) but then I read afterwards that Selena's father was executive producer - which explained everything really. I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote the script too. What a shame; so much more could have been done with Selena's extraordinary life story.
loved it it really didi touch me would def watch again

Often overlooked because of Ms Lopez' private life, this is the film that launched the all-singing all-dancing actresses career, and because of some bad film choices, she isn't taken very seriously, but this story of the Tejano (Mexican) superstar who was brutally murdered just as her career took off in 1995, shows Lopez at her best; her intensity in the role and her ability to 'inhabit' a character shines through and proves that though she's let her self go in the last few years, she is a very good actress.

What can i say, a very nice all round story, all the more better because it was true, this is jenifer lopez best acting performance i am not saying shes the best , but this is her best work.
