    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is essentially an Emma Thompson film; she wrote the script and plays one of the key characters. She does look a little old for the part whereas Kate Winslet looks just right. However, Emma Thompson has a fine touch with the dialogue and, anyway, she is a good actress with one of the friendliest faces in movies. Alan Rickman is simply excellent; he improves virtually any movie he's in. Hugh Grant is good without making a lasting impression - he's only on screen a short time compared to the others. The locations are good and overall you are likely to enjoy this film.

  • Emotional rollercoaster

Great film if you like a good storyline and don't mind a more steady paced film! I laughed, I cried, I gasped 'oh my'! My heart strings were well strung but if you like that sort of film (Love Actually, The Holiday, Pearl Harbour) then you will enjoy this also. I loved it and would watch it again.

Beautiful. Absolutely astounding. My review, had it been allowed, would have ended there. However, in light that I'm compelled to say more, it can be no easy manner to reconstruct the sheer brilliance of Austin's prose and gentle character led tales. Fortunately, Lee, Thompson, Winslet, Grant and all deliver with true mastery. If you love Austin - I have no doubt that you would have already seen this. If you don't, then be prepared to.

  • Definitive Austen

I am, admittedly, a bit of an Austen nut! I have read Sense and Sensibility more times than any sane person should - I know great tracts off by heart - but to this day I marvel at the fact that the first time I saw this movie, so artfully was it crafted, that I completely missed the fact that the first few scenes in the film don't even appear in the book! She also dispenses with Sir John Middletons wife completely without leaving any gaps in the plot - such is the mastery of Thompson's writing. Andrew Davies could only dream of having her knack of producing authentic sounding dialogue that is both true to the original text but also thoroughly accessible to those new to Austens, sometimes archaic, language.

The cast too is nothing less than stellar - Thompson is a little old for Elinor but plays it with such sympathy for the character that you couldn't hold it against her! Just as in the original, Marianne leaves you wanting to administer a hearty slap, and you could almost beleive that Austen wrote Edward Ferrers for the jittery, blinking Hugh Grant!
