This film is a must see as it is funny and extreamley entertaining. I would describe sgt Bilko as a family comedy and Steve Martin plays the role of sgt Bilko very well.
You know how sometimes you quite fancy a film but all the reviews say it's rubbish so you don't bother watching it? Well sometimes the reviewers are just plain wrong.
"Sgt Bilko" is hilarious, with Steve Martin making a valiant attempt to fill the shoes of Phil Silvers, star of the TV show on which the film is based. Not that Martin attempts an impersonation of Silvers - that would have been a grave mistake - but the spirit of the great man still shines through this film.
All the old names from the past are present and correct - Doberman, Paparelli, Zimmerman, Henshaw, Colonel Hall - and the updating to today's modern army has been handled well.
Your enjoyment of this movie may boil down to whether you are a fan of Steve Martin or not as he carries the film, but if you are you will love this. Whatever the critics say.
