Brilliantly scripted, atmospherically chilling and seat-edged suspenseful right up to its masterful shock ending, this hard-hitting psychological horror concerns a group of workers hired to clear an abandoned insane asylum of asbestos in one week. As the crew, all harboring dark secrets of their own, is drawn deeper into the mysteries surrounding the imposing building — patient abuse, medieval medical procedures and demonic possession rumours — the grueling pressures mount to complete their assignment. Soon an awful truth emerges, triggered by playing a case history tape marked “Session 9”, and someone cracks under the murderous strain. Evocatively shot on High Definition Digital Video and graced by superb ensemble performances, especially from Peter Mullan and Josh Lucas, director Brad Anderson's cautionary tale of psyche-infection is a stunning success on every character-driven, grimly realistic and spine-tingling front.

    endless wait

I thought something ghastly and spectacular is about to come near the finale, but was disappointed that nothing came forward after waiting patiently for the first one hour through the slow pace.

I share the opinion of most of the reviewers in that i was disappointed and this film had the potential for being a first class psychological thriller but lost it somewhere in the middle.

I couldnt make up the connection between the psychotherapy sessions of the inmate of the hospital and the main plot.

The lead characters were talking about inanities most of the time and the last 15 - 20 minutes was reserved for being mindlessly violent

This film had all the potential to be a really great horror film. The tension and atmosphere were built up right from the start to great effect, sadly this film failed to deliver.

Set in a mental hospital which has been closed for 15 years, a group of people set to work on removing the asbestos from the old building to make it usable again. The story unfolds and you learn a little about the history of the hospital and one of it's patients inparticular.

You are on the edge of your seat, waiting for the grande finale, but are left dissappointed. The ending was confusing. It seemed to bear no relation to the main story and it was all over far too quickly (after taking such a long time to get to the action) This totally ruined it for me, a waste of an otherwise promising film.

    Lucas' horror movie terror

    • 29 Oct 2009

Actor Josh Lucas is so terrified of horror movies he refuses to watch - even if he is in them. The 38 year old has starred in a string of scary films, including Brad Anderson slasher Session 9 and 2000 thriller American Psycho. But Lucas admits he is too terrified to sit through any gory scenes and won't even watch his own work. He tells the New York Daily News, "I won't see scary movies. I've been in them and then I've been like, 'Whoa, this is too scary for me!' I guess I've held on to those Read more
