    [Highly rated reviewer]

I might have appreciated Seven Samurai more had I seen it before The Magnificent Seven, but I found myself comparing the two and, to be honest, liked the cowboy film better. Seven Samurai was a bit too long for my liking, but I did enjoy it and I'm glad I've now seen it. Don't see myself watching it again, though.

The short answer is yes. I find it hard to describe this film, the only thing i can say is that its really charming. Its clear why its influenced so many movie makers. The story is so good even its remakes are fantastic (magnificent seven, bugs life),

Its can be tough going if your not ready to sit down and really pay attention and obviously its difficult for an old film to stand up to more current releases in certain aspects, but if you want to watch some classic great cinema you will not be disapointed.

Watch this film if : You love cinema and would like to know where pretty much all US Westerns get their mojo from. Don't Watch this film if : You don't like subtitles, developing plot lines or characterisation done through expression

  • Definitely worth it, when you have the time to spare...

Engaging and stunningly shot in places, this film has earned it's reputation. Unfortunately, viewed in the context of modern cinema tastes and techniques it does feel a bit clunky, but the acting is better than you'll find in many modern-day blockbusters. The undeniable influence this film has had on action movies ever since has given it it's status as a 'classic', but the film itself is definitely worth watching. The main problem is it's length - I feel like you could cut a whole hour from the film and it would remain epic, so it can seem overindulgent in places. Nonetheless, a must see for any film fan. Even when moving slowly it can be fun to try to spot similarities to other things you've seen and realise that's because those other favourites have been directly influenced!

I had been looking for something different to watch than the Blockbusters, and I'm glad I chose Japanese greats like Ozu, Kurosawa and frankly, can't wait to discover more. Like one of the other reviewers said, it's action with a bit of light hearted humour that provokes a lot of food for thought. It is no wonder that it is considered one of the most influential films in Japanese cinema. It is unfortunate though, that the choppy subtitles made the experience just slightly less enjoyable.

  • Action with a touch of comedy

This was a mixture of action and comedy. I dont think the subtitles took much away from it but it would have been a 5 star if all of them were readable and not just flashed up (you can figure it out thought if you think about it). I thoroughly enjoyed this film and may watch it again in many years time as it was very enjoyable.
