  • Monkey is funky he never stops...

but this film is a great big flop. I rented this expecting another crouching tiger/hero/house of flying daggers but got something as cheesy 'Monkey' without meaning to and without the humour. The premise for the film was good if a little bit tired, a group of villagers need protecting from evil invaders, so why not hire the services of 7 sword wielding martial artists, each with a mystical blade. The idea that they must master their emotions to master the blades was an interesting development, but unfortunately one that was never really explored. In fact much of the film was only half pursued and consequently some scenes and characters seemed to be just thrown in for no realpurpose, and other scenes and characters went unexplored or unaswered. Reading around this film appears to have suffered greatly from being edited down from 4+hrs to 2hrs, well the editor must have been asleep on the job and you will probably be asleep well before the end. Do yourself a favour and hire 'The Water Margin' series on DVD instead....

This is a big film with a wide appeal - not just another slash fest. Give it a chance and you will be rewarded with a stirring adventure.

  • Monkey was more fun and better made

I start with a disclaimer - I love Asian Cinema. When done well it has an epic sweep that embraces beautiful shooting and wonderful narratives that are entertaining and thrilling.

All the things this film is not.

The characters were introduced so quickly that it was difficult to keep track of who was what. The only memorable 'bad guy' was killed off half way through when it looked like the director was setting this up for a great scrap at the end, whilst the introduction of one character seemed to come out of a plot point for Monkey.

As far as action went it was there, yet lacked panache. Some of the wirework was patchy and I kept forgetting who was supposed to have what special move, power or whatever.

Overall it was a colossal waste of time.

  • It's nothing like Hero or Flying Daggers, so don't watch it

For me this film drags. These mystical Seven Swords don't seem to get much sword play. Plot was pretty patchy and was overcomplicated for what it actually was.

Action is few and far between, no character development, poor story.

An 'epic' that you can afford to miss.
