Thought-provoking musing on sex for film's sake
By immaterial from London , 13 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film managed to provoke quite intense discussion afterwards. It is
thought-provoking and intelligent and expects the same of its viewers. We are invited in behind the scenes of the making of a film, leading up to a crucial sex scene between the two young nervy actors. The film is multilayered - we watch as the director lies to, bullies, flirts, comforts and cajoles her team in order to create a realistic illusion of truth to portray on her film. As viewers we wonder how are we being manipulated whilst watching the events unfold, how many takes were required to produce the credible scenes taking place. This film reminded me of watching Kiarostami's "Through the Olive Trees", a glimpse into the thoughts of the film-maker as they create their personal vision, and the steps they need to take in order to realise it.- Was this review helpful to you?

(20)Sex Is Comedy
By Quartermiler (96 reviews) from Peterborough , 19 Dec 2009A simple story of complex relationships taken from Breillat's own experiences during a film shoot. Not strictly a comedy outright, but humerous without doubt, with some glorious comic moments. Loved the dialogue and the subject matter was treated with some interesting detail, if indeed you are not already in the movie making business. Memorable on several levels.- Was this review helpful to you?

Basically Breillat
By a customer from North Walsham, Norfolk , 28 May 2009Don't expect too much from this film, it's basically about a troubled director getting her vision across. Almost certainly it's come from her experience of making her controversial film. Don't expect to be wowed there is no comedy, long film of boredom and misery.- Was this review helpful to you?

Naughty 'La Nuit américaine'
By a customer from North Cornelly, South Wales , 23 Jul 2008François Truffaut did it much better in 1973 and for most of this film I thought this was another piece of direction-less Catherine Breillat chicanery - with a cane no less.
The fallacious message of this film seems to be a version of the old Welsh adage 'If you are going to have one, have a big one..' but then, the epiphany in the final scene...what?....actors can act?
Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider managed to cross the same rubicon in 'Ultimo tango a Parigi' - but for Breillat and her team it is the act rather than the actor.
Thought provoking yes, but not satisfying on any level. Close, Catherine, but no cigar!- Was this review helpful to you?

sex is comedy
By jingles (39 reviews) from Hull , 06 Jun 2008a revelatory attempt to show the mechanics, indiscretions and realism of so called erotic drama. Nothing sexually erotic or arousing, just the processes and relationships needed.- Was this review helpful to you?
