Alfred Hitchcock's personal favourite of his own movies begins when a train, belching out a cloud of ominous black smoke, pulls into Santa Rosa, California. Joseph Cotten has arrived and is met by his adoring niece, Teresa Wright. Both are called Charlie. She is pumpkin-pie innocence; he is a suave killer, wanted back east for relieving widows of their wealth and their lives. Although Hitchcock blurs the line between good and evil (endorsing Cotten's outbursts against the cosy complacency of the town), the two Charlies are inevitably pitched against each other as suspicion increases and the police start nosing around. The movie may lack the show-off set pieces that Hitchcock turned into his trademark, yet its tension never falters.
Complex, emotionally charged film that catches the confusion of a child caught between reality and fantasy, in a situation too difficult for her to deal with; it tackles its difficult subject-matter without sensationalism, concentrating on the love-hate r

mother and daughter adore family favorite uncle charlie. He`s on the run and needs to hide out and so he makes a surprise visit.Although his sister is unaware of his true character, his niece starts getting curious and then scared.Early U.S. Hitchcock set in small town America.Humour and suspense brilliantly acted by Cotton (of course} and the rest.Excellent movie.
Shadow of A Doubt was a very wonderful surprise. I?d heard little about it, it certainly didn?t seem to be mentioned in the same breath as some of his more famous works. I can?t imagine why, because it?s utterly engrossing. The characters were all interesting and there was a genuine sense of dread towards the end. A must see Hitchcock thriller! If you liked Rope, Rear Window or Jamaica in I?d recommend you see this.
This is an excellent thriller
which has withstood the test of time
considering when it was made.

One of Hitchcock's finest, and indeed, his favourite, this is a great film, superbly acted by the whole cast, with particular mention to Theresa Wright and Joseph Cotten, as the two Charlies. Cotten had never acted a nasty before, but his performance here is full of malice and menace, right up to the end when he meets his deserved fate. Wright is wonderful as the niece who wants to trust her evil but charismatic uncle at the beginning of the film, but quckly suspects that he's not the wonderful person she thought he was.
I'd recommend watching tha accompanying explanation of the making of the film - it's very informative and interesting, especially if you're a Hitchcock fan.
Joseph Cotten is great as a creepy Uncle, and all the usual Hitchcock elements are present. Not as great as Vertigo or Rear Window, but then what is.
Recommended for all Hitchcock fans.
from start to finish this is a cracking good yarn with a wealth of good actors filling in their roles with perfection if you enjoy a good murder mystery you won't go wrong renting this disc!one of hitchcocks' best movie.
If you like hitchcock films then this is a film for you.
Its a black and white film but this only adds suspence to such a great movie. They certainly don't make films like this anymore.
well acted. had seen many years ago, but enjoyed trying to solve the crime
This was a chilling Hitchcock movie. Joseph Cotten perfectly cast as nice Uncle Charlie, with a chilling undertone, how did he get that ring and why wouldn't he have he's picture taken.
Teresa Wright plays he's favourite niece.
Didn't spot Hitch.
Yep, tie yerself down to yer armchair and prepare for a treat. This is smalltown USA trussed up and gutted, as disturbing in it's own sweet-sweet way as Psycho. Family values peeled away till the monster of the ID begins to leak out.
Perfect casting of the perfect small Californian town and perfect casting of Joseph Cotten - surely he can't be that bad? With Hitchcock, yes, he can! A Hitchcock essential.
