In late-19th-century New Mexico, a hunting party of decadent European aristocrats wanders onto the reservation of some angry Apaches, and it's up to the mysterious wanderer, Shalako (Sean Connery), to save them from getting slaughtered. The group includes Honor Blackman (Pussy Galore in GOLDFINGER) as the sexually restless Lady Bagget and BrigItte Bardot as the sharp shooting Countess Lazaar, who (of course) falls for Shalako. It's an unusual blend of wide-open Western action and European character intrigue as the decadent aristocrats sip champagne and flirt with their unwashed, treacherous cowboy guides. Veteran director Edward Dmytryk keeps the flaming arrows flying while Connery and Bardot hold attention in this weird hybrid of American Western and European art film. (Yes, Bardot has a seminude bathing scene.) SHALAKO, based on the novel by Louis L'Amour, was filmed almost entirely outdoors amid the dark grey landscapes of Almeria, Spain, in a style undoubtedly indebted to the Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns of the time.

Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot are screen icons well adrift out west in this would-be epic western, though geographically they are not so far from their respective manors since it was filmed entirely in Spain. Despite director Edward Dmytryk — Broken Lance, Warlock — in the saddle, this is a slow-moving, high-camp fiasco. Connery (playing a cowboy) and Bardot (an aristocrat) are not alone in being oddly cast, as British actors Jack Hawkins and Eric Sykes also look like fish out of water. Really cherishable only for its truly inane theme song — Shalako, Shalako — and the sight of Honor Blackman choking to death on her own diamonds.
A cute idea is given routine treatment; though packed with stars, the action never becomes very exciting despite incidental brutalities.
Sean Connery leads a party of European Toffs into indian terratory for a spot of hunting. Bridget Bardot looks fantastic as the lady who falls in love.
Stylish western with loads of action
It is a film with all the basics of a better film. Some of the actors were capable of better performances. At times the situations demanded more anger or vehemence. Honor Blackman was excellent. The indians tell the rich tourists to get off their land. Rich tousists think 'That's my line!' Indians try to change their minds. Sean Connery helps some of the tourists to survive. It's good but should have been better.
