Someone, it would appear, has taken over the underworld activities of Atlanta, Georgia - Drugs, call-girls, political pay-offs and murder - and a new kingpin is calling all the shots. Undercover cop Tom Sharky (Burt Reynolds) knows him only as 'The Ace'. The trouble is that Sharky, once the best, brightest and meanest cop in the narcotics squad, blew his cover when he blew away a drugs pusher on a crowded bus and as a result has been kicked downstairs to the vice squad to bust the city's pimps, prostitutes and perverts. Skarky can either accept his demotion, or he can turn a colourful crew of vice cops into a personal police 'machine' in order to flush out 'The Ace'.
