Jake Briggs (Kevin Bacon) has been in love with Kristy Bainbridge (Elizabeth McGovern) since he was a teenager. They marry right after college and embark on their new life together, with all of its ups and downs. Told largely through the eyes of narrator Jake, a would-be author who is prone to fits of fanciful, humorous hallucination--such as lawn-mowing neighbors breaking into song--this John Hughes film deals with the trials and tribulations of growing up and the responsibilities that come with marriage, adulthood, jobs, and children. Alec Baldwin appears as Davis McDonald, Jake's best friend, who is living life in the fast lane in New York, making Jake doubt his complacent, suburban lifestyle. Bacon and McGovern are believable as wide-eyed newlyweds dealing with the realities of "happily ever after," such as finding a job, paying the mortgage, and dealing with in-laws. The closing credits are enlivened by a parade of celebrities, including Kirstie Alley, Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Olivia Newton-John, Stewart Copeland, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, John Candy, Penny Marshall, Ally Sheedy, and many others.

A rather humdrum look at young love turning into disgruntled parenthood, starring a highly believable Kevin Bacon and a less rooted-in-reality Elizabeth McGovern. There are some neat jokes about bulges, nappies and loss of freedom, and Bacon's terror at the impending event is almost palpable. But the movie fails to break any new ground, and, after a while, there is a familiar jaded ring to every hackneyed scenario. This is a shame, as director John Hughes tries his best to give everything a sparky, pacey feel, but the end result is simply just not funny enough.
"...John Hughes seems to be crafting a comic movie valentine to approaching fatherhood....His intentions are tender and his eye sharp..."
This, in my opinion is one of the most under-rated films of the 80's. It escaped attention probably because of the naff title - this film has surprisingly little to do with the fact that one of the lead characters becomes pregnant.
Mostly, it is about the pressures and expectations we face as we progress through the standard path in life - from colleagues, from family, from friends, from society and from ourselves. It is also about faith, friendship, love and monogamy.
Sounds like a heavy mix? It is, but it's presented as a John Hughes comedy, and therefore the profound messages of this film are subtle and underlay what is basically a simple, yet highy imagintive and funny film. The narrative throughout from the lead character works really well, and the short flights of imagination scattered throughout are hilarious.
Four stars not Five, simply because there are one or two scenes that look dated, and also because of the only fault this film ever had - the scenes towards the very end, when the film just tries too hard to suddenly pull at the heart strings, and fails. Don't let that put you off, though - This is a brilliant little film.
This movie is really funny. I had to rent it as its a film I hadn't seen in ages and wanted a laugh. It's the type of film that you end up with a silly grin on your face. Kevin Bacon is great.
