    “Our Leslie’s going to be one of those 'New-Clear' Scientists.

    When he passes his exams, he’ll have letters behind his name, like.....

    M.P.....

    or Y.M.C.A” !!!

    Malapropos after malapropos, from the fabulous Hylda Baker.

    If you remember and enjoy the old sitcoms;

    “Nearest and Dearest” or “Not on Your Nellie”, you must see this.

    Hylda Baker gives a great performance as a Mother who knows, y’know !!!

    The surprise is that this was made as late as 1962 - it feels more like the mid-fifties. It's either an attempt to make an older generation of British comics appeal to the young, or an attempt to make the young palatable to an older generation who felt that things were slipping away from them, but either way it doesn't work. Northern working class and youth of the day stereotypes abound, as ma stays in the kitchen buttering bread, pa sneaks out back for a sup of ale and young people gather in 'coffee bars and record bars' to listen to insipid rock and cha cha cha. Interesting that all the older generation speak a Yorkshire idiolect, while the young people use RP - add chauvinism to the mix. Hylda Baker was a fine comedienne, but she's wasted here, and her trademark malapropisms and catchphrases are lost in the mix. It's pretty typical of its day, though, and baby boomers should cringe watching it: all the dialogue about how the youth carry on with their impenetrable language, using words like 'dig' and 'cool'. The wheel turns.
