There is no doubt that John Ford was one of the best of the popular directors who ever worked in Hollywood. Returning to this film after many years I was surprised how disjointed it was, with lots of good individual scenes that never completely gel. We are also treated to rather too much broad Irish humour from Victor McLaglan that must have appealed to John Ford’s Irish side but adds little to the film. On the plus side, John Wayne gives a fine performance and we get to enjoy lots of beautifully framed Technicolor images. A number of Ford’s films tip into sentimentality but this one stays on the right side of sentiment.
