I was pleasantly surprised at just how good this film was. The whole production, from casting to filming had a feel of a movie of a much grander budget. The writer was allowed to let the story unfold naturally without rushing to the gay bit; the acting sublime and characters were very real and likeable. Im not into surfing at all but I enjoyed those scenes as if was absorbed in the sport. What I really found refreshing was just how realistic the love story was wove in to the fabric of these peoples lives and although it was present it wasnt the overriding theme of this classy picture, that was about the struggle of trying not just to live, but exist when you have hardly any money or anything at all. Would I rent it again? No, I bought the film ten minutes after I finished watching it!
For the first few minutes of this film I was beginning to wonder why I was watching it. I just wasn't sure what direction the film was taking.
However as the story developed I was more and more involved with the characters and with the emerging love story. By the end of this film my heart had melted, I had been wrung out by the emotion engendered by the main characters. I wanted to reach out to Zach and tell him everything was going to be alright; his angst and his pain were palpable thanks to the superb acting skills of Trevor Wright. Shaun's confident but vulnerable persona made me want to be his friend. I found myself deeply moved by the path these characters took in their love. Credit to both Trevor Wright and Brad Rowe for their on screen chemistry and superb acting skills.
I have rarely seen a film where the characters have seemed so real, believable, and likeable. I even believed in Zach's supremely selfish but pitiful sister following her own misplaced dreams as she was.
I am by no means a fan of surfing but the surfing sequences in this film were beautifully shot and sensual. The soundtrack added a perfect accent to the changing moods of the story.
Do I sound like a fan of theis movie ? I hope so cos I absolutely loved it; I loved Zach and I loved Shaun, both in different ways but by the end of the film I felt I knew them and that I loved them; that for me is the mark of a skillfully written, cast, and acted movie.
Now I have seen this film (twice in 24 hours !) I know I will have to see and see it again, and I feel confident that there will be shades and nuances that are different and that I had missed each time I see it.
