Again the incorrect Radio Times review has been submitted,so ignore it.Amoung Holmes afficianados these adaptations are considered the most faithful.Picture quality ropey but otherwise these are atmospheric and capture the true flavour of the original stories.Cushing is perfect as you'd expect,Nigel Stock first class as Watson.I much prefer these versions to the over blown Jeremy Brett performances, where the spirit of the original stories was lost amidst his theatrical and self indulgent scenery chewing

These are very enjoyable adaptations and it is a shame the BBC junked most of the episodes' original archive tapes. Until other complete episodes are found on cine transfers (as has happened with supposedly lost Doctor Who episodes from the same era) these are the only titles available from Peter Cushing's BBC Holmes series. His Holmes isn't as sharp, manic and spiky as it was in Hammer's 1959 Hound of the Baskervilles, but it's not hard to see these as the advntures of a slightly older detective who has aged - the literary canon spans 30 years at least. It's a bit odd seeing the great Cushng stumble on his lines but videotaping was very expensive in the 60's and any retakes were avoided unless absolutely necessary so a few fluffed lines remain. They are, however, for fans of period drama and Peter Cushing alike, a rare chance to view an almost lost attempt at what should have been tried a decad earlier - a series of Holmes/Cushing films.

For my money, no adaptation has ever quite caught the unique atmosphere and detached intellectual tone of Conan Doyle's original stories. However, this BBC series makes a good attempt to capture the flavour of the original. Most credit goes to Peter Cushing who is a marvellous Holmes but Nigel Stock also does well as a more intelligent Doctor Watson than usual. The witty scripts are also a bonus - Cushing relishes his dialogue flourishes.

The drawback for some viewers will be the staginess of the presentation which reflects the production standards of the time - as does the VT/FIlm mix which is sometimes a bit distracting. But the strength of the stories and performances overcome the problems and each episode is 50 minutes of enjoyment. It's a shame that more episodes from the series are not still in existence.

DVD presentation is basic but more than acceptable. No extras at all however.

It is a testament to the fact of talent being of age and experience a far better prize. The horror genre is often mocked.Detective fiction, however, Has remained steadily in fashion. The beeb were always good at costume drama. And the multi-genre crossover of Sherlock Holmes is certain to attract attention.Peter Cushing was perhaps the finest actor of his generation. He reached celebrity status on television when he starred in 1984 way back in 1954.Appearances in Hammer horror films and the Morecambe and Wise show kept him in the limelight throughout the seventies .His immortality in movie-goers minds was cemented with his cameo in Star Wars.He effortlessly assumes the character of Sherlock holmes perfectly.

Costume mugging so ridiculous I kept thinking of Monty Python, and expecting them to burst into a silly song. Which would have been really good, actually.
