Basil Rathbone ( analytical ) and Nigel Bruce ( bumbling ) produce another classic detective tale . No need for foul language , nudity or excessive violence . A definitive reminder of when Britain was Great and her people proud .- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)Good old fashioned fun.
By Lotofun (27 reviews) from Maidenhead , 23 Feb 2011It`s looking very dated now but it`s still enjoyable. All the sleuthing with the mind of the master at work. A bit of propaganda thrown in ( well it was made during the 2nd world war)this applies to both films (two on the disc) The preview tells you about the location and you can guess the plot. It`s a well made film and much better than the 2nd film, that one is still enjoyable. If you`re like me, a Sherlock Holmes fan, one who enjoys Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce then sit back and enjoy.- Was this review helpful to you?

Poor quality
By pomak249 (10 reviews) from Huntingdon , 11 Nov 2009I was really surprised at the awful quality of this disc - the films (there are 2 on this disc) are lifted str8 from VHS by the looks which I wasnt expecting as its supposedly part of a box-set. Cant recommend on quality only but good films if you can stand to watch em.- Was this review helpful to you?

'Musgrave Ritual, they call it'
By Squizz (43 reviews) from Lancaster , 27 Jun 2007A bizarre string of murders occur at Musgrave Manor, a gloomy Northumberland convalescent home where Watson's working. Is the killer the enigmatic housekeeper, the drunken butler, one of the shellshocked patients or the man who needs to come round and fix the clock chimes? My money was on the pub staff who let ravens swoop round the toby jugs and are suspiciously bad at pulling pints (get that bitter topped up, Sherlock!).
Another creepy old house affair but not at all badly executed, and at last Basil's allowed a sensible haircut.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic Holmes and Watson
By David Sheehan from Lincoln, England , 18 Feb 2004This is a 1943 adaptation (very loose) of the Conan Doyle short story 'The Musgrave Ritual'. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce star as Holmes and Watson, and are very enjoyable in the roles.
The film is 'updated' to be set in a world war II officers' convalescent home, and is considerably different from the original short story - there is a different villain for example. It's charming stuff, but for a really thrilling version of the story you need to see the Jeremy Brett TV adaptation, which is one of the best in that series.- Was this review helpful to you?
