Anticlimax
By Philip Hewitt from Tanygrisiau Post Office, North Wales , 02 Sep 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
A star-studded cast plods through a rather unlikely plot, though I very much enjoyed the railway shots. This film is very much on the level of the pre-war Basil Rathbone Holmes films (though it benefits from colour and genuine scenery) with the knockabout comedy of the post-war 'Carry On' series. What was all the fuss about? The world's biggest diamond was despatched to Britain by normal parcel post and arrived safely. No need to trouble the master detective. A bit of an anticlimactic yawn for real Sherlock Holmes fans.
The stars were awarded for the interesting railway shots, by the way.- Was this review helpful to you?

By juradino (811 reviews) from London , 27 Apr 2012Holmes is about to retire when he is sent to South Africa in affair involving major diamond. Made in 1991 in 2 parts it is as epic as epic. Lee is great as Holmes but at times he has that expression that only lacks Dracula's fangs. PMN looks good as Watson too but perhaps they should have been cast in these roles in 1960s. And of course only Holmes knows which diamond is the real one.- Was this review helpful to you?

By FarrukhsHoney (471 reviews) from Basildon , 08 Apr 2008i much prefer Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes, maybe i'm just too used to seeing Christopher Lee as Dracula- Was this review helpful to you?
