Brilliant fun

The story is not based on a Conan Doyle original, but I think this is one of the best of the whole Basil Rathbone series. The creepy atmosphere, the fog, devious and suspicious characters, surprise ending, it's all here.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Well, I liked it
By InspectorSands (209 reviews) from London , 19 May 2010There's about as much of Algiers in this film as the Great Bear is in the James Bond film From Russia with Love - titles can be deceptive, so don't expect Holmes and Watson in a Casbah-type situation.
Though not really based on a Conan Doyle tale, this is more akin to an Agatha Christie whodunnit set within a confined location. Holmes has a couple of supercool James Bond moments when encountering villainy. It's not set in Victorian times, but purists may not mind as the setting could be, bar the use of an aeroplane in early scenes I suppose. They even manage to include a sinister fog, though it's not a London fog! I really enjoyed this film, I found less snags in it than in some of the others. Sure, Holmes disappears for a short while offscreen, but he does that in Hounds of the Baskervilles too.- Was this review helpful to you?

Somebody hide the key to that piano!
By Squizz (43 reviews) from Lancaster , 28 Jun 2007Representatives of imperilled monarch King Nikolas beg Holmes to return him safely to his homeland; boarding the ocean liner S.S. Friesland he and Watson ward off unending assassination attempts.
It's undeniably padded out with sets from the somewhat-average chanteuse Marjorie Riordan, but it's really quite appealing to see the duo enjoying some R&R and getting away from shadowy manor houses (though only swapping foggy streets for foggy seas). Watson's mistrust of a breezy spinster ('Ducky!') is fun, Sherlockians will spot a clever in-joke, and there's a genuine surprise or two to be found, not least the Doctor's rendition of 'Loch Lomond'.
The start is great, but it rather fizzles out toward the end.- Was this review helpful to you?
