Holmes as Doyle wrote him
By a customer from lancs , 24 Sep 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
If you read Conan Doyle's stories you will find these atmospheric BBC productions to be the most faithful adaptations,Cushing is perfectly cast and the stories have the 'boy's own' feel the original stories have, virtually every other filmed/televised adaptation (inc. Rathbone)eschewed this in favour of a darker more intense(and inaccurate) portrayal of Holmes which has really distorted the true nature of the original stories, which in fact are very light in tone.Picture quality suffers a little with age. This series was the most successful the BBC ever produced, showing to millions worldwide.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Charming
By a customer from London , 09 Jan 2010I've never read the actual Holmes stories but I was familiar with both these episodes from the Jeremy Brett Adaptations. The Sign of Four is one of my favourites. This version condenses much of that feature length production and has a pleasing snappiness to it. I recognised a few familiar lines. I love the feel of these 60's BBC productions so that's a definite plus point for me whereas others may be put off by a perceived cheapness. They're charming and good natured.
I'd previously seen Peter Cushing as Holmes is the Mask of Death film where his age seemed to be against the character as I saw him. He's very much a boys own hero in this series, very affable and in control with the occasional bite. Nigel Stock's Watson initially came across more like the Nigel Bruce Watson but thankfully with far less bumbling. Though not my favourite pairing, they're very likeable.
These are a simple watch where the stories are easy to understand and worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?

Something to avoid
By a customer from London , 14 Sep 2005This version of the great detective story is very poor, and not worth renting, espectially if the Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett Series is available as an alternative- Was this review helpful to you?
