If you are into low budget wartime morale boosting films then this one is for you.
The now impressive array of contemporary actors for the time do a sterling battle with the script; but lose. It appears that the screenplay writers had no idea how to boost the public's morale in this early stage of the war, a rather rushed job by the look of it.
Ealing Studios did a much better job later on with films such as Went the Day Well, Mr Foreman Went to France, San Demetrio London, The Bells Go Down and Next of Kin - all chilling but good wartime morale boosters and well worth watching for the historical content, good acting and storyline.
The models of ships, aircraft, tanks, trucks, buildings and islands look just like models. Watch out for the model aircraft turning in formation (they don't bank around) really funny if you've used Flight Simulator or have a pilot's licence. Also watch for the reaction of the C.P.O. Air Mechanic as his son dies trying to take off from the damaged aircraft carrier (He looks really miffed for 10 seconds; Oh well, war is hell - next aircraft up for take-off). Many little things like that to watch for; so have fun.
Just watch it for the fun element and don't take it too seriously, I bet the cinema audiences in 1942 didn't.
