David Cronenberg's first important horror film may now look a little crude, but the obsessions that would colour his later works are already apparent. The story is centred around a vaguely futuristic apartment complex where a parasite is gradually working its way through the occupants, transforming them into sex-obsessed zombies. It's not exactly subtle, but Cronenberg delights in some stomach-churning imagery and the stark, chilling design would later be revisited in films such as Dead Ringers and The Fly. There are no big names in the cast, although horror aficionados will be pleased to see the presence of Hammer stalwart Barbara Steele.
Angry genetically engineered poops turn you into a murderous slobbering nymphomaniac granny shagging pederast sex zombie!
Cheap.
Grim.
And very very cool.
Considering this was made in 1975 with quite a low budget this was suprisingly good. This was the first feature by director David Cronenberg and has many set scenes that have been copied by other directors since. Like the parasite bursting out of the stomach (similar to Alien??).

All the make up and creature effects are done very convincingly and by one person...again due to the low budget.

It caused an uproar at the time, due to the era in which it was made.. a lot of near the knuckle stuff.. i.e. lesbian scenes, and a horiffic scene involving a girl dressed in school uniform. This is now less shocking, but still packs a wallop!
