Yes, the film quality is poor, a lot of the supporting actors are abysmal, and the 'monster' looks like a phallic turd, but incredibly Cronenburgs debut transcends its limitations to become a beguilling and unique film experience. The emphasis is less on the monster than the reactions of the infected humans, the end result of sexually unihibted masses chasing down the hero is reminiscent of early Romero films (specifically night of the Living Dead and The Crazies) though with Cronenburg bringing a style of his own, especially diring the classic ending. Look past the ropey production value and youll find a true horror classic.
