In the early 1970s, a series of five 'Babycart' films were made in Japan, based on a Manga comic strip about Lone Wolf and Cub, a samurai of high rank who falls out of favour with authority and wanders through feudal Japan with his young son in a baby cart, offering his services as an assassin while his enemies try to kill him. This film, 'Shogun Assassin', is a US version composed of re-edited scenes from the first two films and dubbed with a script ccontaining a greatly simplified plot. It's superb as it is, but to get the full impact, rent the entire original Japanese 'Babycart' series, now available in the UK. 'Shogun Assassin' was banned in the UK for some 20 years after being condemned as a 'video nasty' in the tabloid press circa 1983, but is now legal. And a good thing, too.
Brilliant film, a world class sumurai hack and slash movie. This was the first movie to show all the gore of films, this film changed the film scene for life.
