Most helpful review Shogun Assassin

  • Stylish but bloody and violent

    [Highly rated reviewer]

In the early 1970s, a series of five 'Babycart' films were made in Japan, based on a Manga comic strip about Lone Wolf and Cub, a samurai of high rank who falls out of favour with authority and wanders through feudal Japan with his young son in a baby cart, offering his services as an assassin while his enemies try to kill him. This film, 'Shogun Assassin', is a US version composed of re-edited scenes from the first two films and dubbed with a script ccontaining a greatly simplified plot. It's superb as it is, but to get the full impact, rent the entire original Japanese 'Babycart' series, now available in the UK. 'Shogun Assassin' was banned in the UK for some 20 years after being condemned as a 'video nasty' in the tabloid press circa 1983, but is now legal. And a good thing, too.

  • Pointless slaughter

Senseless, characterless, almost plot-less, orange blood stained film that doesn't do any justice to sword fighting. Acting is very poor and characters tend to have their heads severed before acquiring any depth.

The dubbing only delivers the fatal blow to a shamefully weak chapter in Japanese film making.

  • Samurai film out of context

The experience for me was much more enjoyable than the actual content, hence the 5 stars.

The film in itself is cut and dubbed to the point of being nearly incomprehensible, doing away with the rythm and style of the original films and adding a totally incongruous electro soundrack - but that was what made this so interesting to watch! It was a sort of meta-film, a succession of fight scenes and odd dialogues, and a story that ultimately goes nowhere.

If you are a die-hard fan of Japanese samurai films like Kurosawa's, this will look utterly ridiculous. Keep your sense of humour and you might find it enjoyable...

  • I enjoyed it

I watched this as I read in another review that Shogun Assassin was mentioned in Kill Bill.

If so, it was very kind of the director to reference the film that he has just remade, to high acclaim.

The story being told through the young boy is a nice touch and I found it entertaining when he was talking about his father slicing people up as most would talk about the weather.

  • Not as good as I had hoped

After reading the reviews I was expecting this film to be extra good. It is full of blood drenching action, the only problem being that the colour of the blood is not very realistic and it is very obvious that these are just special effects.

It was worth watching but I cannot see there being much difference between the Blu-Ray and DVD versions.

Dubbed and must be a merge of a couple of the early ones. I'm a great fan of the ex-kaishakunin and Daigaro, however this is a sh*te american version. The music itself is unbearable. Try the others though, just check the language to ensure you don't pick up a dubbed one
