As you battle through this tedious adaptation of James Clavell's blockbuster novel, be thankful you have been spared the marathon that was the original miniseries. That enough material for another three features has gone Awol should alert you to the fact that what remains is so packed with unexplained characters and implausible events that it is virtually impossible to decipher what's going on. Unaware that most of his performance was destined for the cutting-room floor, but only too aware that Toshiro Mifune is acting him off the screen, Richard Chamberlain is wildly OTT as the English sailor washed up in 17th-century Japan.
I have had this made-for-tv mini series on VHS for years and have watched it lots of times. It's all about an english captain shipwrecked in japan and having to come to terms with having to learn the japanesse way of life or die at the hands of the shogun's samurai. He also has to avoid the local catholics who belive his presence is going to ruin their potition with the shogun. This is a well made production set against a beautifull landscape, in total the entire series runs about nine and a half hours so will take some time to watch, but it's well worth it.
I was six years old when I first saw Shogun on TV, it has stuck in my mind ever since then.
Only now 23 years later can I really appreciate this timeless masterpiece.
James Clavells epic book transformed to film is a genuine work of art, flawless in it's imagery of feudal Japan, its culture and it's people.
Love, politics , honour and ultimate power.... watch this epic series you won't be disappointed.
