Excellent period peice

I have had this made-for-tv mini series on VHS for years and have watched it lots of times. It's all about an english captain shipwrecked in japan and having to come to terms with having to learn the japanesse way of life or die at the hands of the shogun's samurai. He also has to avoid the local catholics who belive his presence is going to ruin their potition with the shogun. This is a well made production set against a beautifull landscape, in total the entire series runs about nine and a half hours so will take some time to watch, but it's well worth it.- Was this review helpful to you?

By marekrafl (2 reviews) , 18 May 2013seems to me that mistakes in this film are easily forgiven as it is A/. a brilliant insight into the culture of Japan B/. a beginners' course in Japanese - I was too young to watch it as it came out (i. e. supposedly stormy sea, buckets of water thrown at actors, but when characters go overboard they're in calm waters... or persistent British accent of all European characters adding foreign words in to make it 'authentic'; it's not a book it's a film). Having said that, show me a film with no mistakes :)- Was this review helpful to you?

RESPECTFULLY TURGID
By WBarklam (36 reviews) from London , 12 May 2008I really wanted to like this as I'd heard so many encomiums about it, but sadly I have to concur with the Radio Times on this one. It has all the morbid gait of a slothful funeral march - it looks good, sounds fairly good, acting is not overly atrocious, but for Gawdsakes, so slow ! Perhaps it was my expectation of chopsocky karate kicks that disappointed me - let's just say I have no desire to visit Japan after sleeping through this production- Was this review helpful to you?

Epic historical tale
By a customer from West Lothian , 19 Jul 2007Saw this first on TV many years ago, (1980s) and thoroughly enjoyed it then. I wasn't disappointed, it has lost none of its grip over me. Richard Chamberlain is excellent as the pilot of a ship in the 17th? century, which is caught in a violent storm off 'the Japans' coast. His and his crew's adventure begins when the Japanese confiscate the ship and take the men captive. One huge adventure which I found gripping, exhilirating, emotional, romantic and violent sometimes too. Highly recommend.
