LOVEFiLM Review Shopgirl

  • 3 stars out of 5

Shopgirl is the big screen adaptation of Steve Martin?s popular novella starring Claire Danes as Mirabelle, a sullen retail clerk at the glove department of Saks 5th Ave.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

On the plus side Shopgirl gets more watchable the further it goes, and the character development is really quite spectacular for a film under 2 hours.

Unfortunately, though, it's not a film that grabbed me. Steve Martin's brand of humour has certainly matured and become more subtle since the days of his wearing arrows through the head.

It was well-camouflaged here - as noted above, the most fun part of the movie was watching the characters on their evolutionary journey from lost, bumbling juveniles to adults who have learned to stand on their own yet complementing each other to be more confident together than apart.

It's worth a watch, but won't knock you over.

  • Interesting and memorable film

There are some negative reviews of this film but I really enjoyed it. It's slow-moving but thoughtful and memorable. It doesn't fit any of the standard Hollywood plots, which is a good thing, and unusual. The characters Mirabelle and Jeremy really develop and grow up through the film, and the Steve Martin character is interesting and poignant. In addition, it's a really pretty film, beautifully shot. Recommend it.

  • Slow in pace, but detailed and touching

An interesting and fairly original perspective on relationships and life in general. The beginning third was really great, with a great pace, but then it faded/slowed very rapidly and I'm not sure that the transition worked. Jason Schwartzman's character was extraordinary, touching and hilarious - I wanted more of him. Claire Danes also moved me on several occasions, and she really put everything into the little nuances of her character.

I think what let the film down was the score, as it was needed to fill some of the slower, practically still, moments. I felt almost bored on a few occasions and I found myself needing to fill the moments with my own thoughts. However, perhaps that was the idea.

I also wonder if Steve Martin was really the right person to star in this. Judging by the dialogue and other information given it seemed like his character was meant to be subtle, refined and repressed, but his acting was just plain and I think he should've taken some inspiration from Claire Danes.

The elements that made it special were some of the shots (for example, of her feet right at the beginning) and the little details, and also the artistic side of her character. Those elements made it unique and touching, and I think it makes it a worthwhile watch.

I just want to counteract the bad reviews here.

I happened to start watching this when flicking through channels late at night, and got drawn in.

The film may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it someones, mine. It is emotional, visually gorgeous and interesting.

The characters may be at times predictable and identikit, and the story leans a few times too often on established character cliches, BUT it makes an excellently interesting alternative to most romantic comedy/dramas.

Jason Schwartzman is adorable and we really feel what happens to the main character. Ultimately it seems real - which might be why, to some people, it seems boring.
