Unconvincing start. Gets better. Becomes utterly mesmerising.
Quite simply the best music documentary I've seen, with an excellent balance between the script, film excerpts and Shostakovich's music. The miracle of Shostakovich's survival is fully brought home. The quality of the performances by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic conducted by Gergiev is outstanding, especially that of the 4th Symphony, which must be one of the most chilling pieces of music ever written! Within the Chronology Chapter there are also individual symphonic movements played by the Kirov Orchestra conducted by Gergiev. Highly recommended.
