This animated fantasy from DreamWorks is an irreverent, occasionally scatological fairy tale with state-of-the-art computer-generated images that almost steal a march on Toy Story. Shrek is an ugly, antisocial green ogre (voiced in a variable Scottish accent by Mike Myers) who must rescue a human princess (Cameron Diaz) in order to appease evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) and rid his swamp of an infestation of traditional fairy-tale characters: three little pigs, a Pinocchio-style character and so on (the disrespectful treatment they receive suggests a sly dig at Disney orthodoxy). The animators achieve a startling level of reality (grass, leaves, dirt and fur are particularly lifelike), but it's the characters that carry what is an incredibly slight beauty-and-the-beast story. The only problem, and it's very minor, is the degree to which Eddie Murphy's Donkey — a partly-improvised vocal turn to match Robin Williams's in Aladdin — steals the film. Children will love it, while adults can enjoy the action-movie homages and Disney-mocking.

this film is superb. my children loved it. Shrek played by Mike Myers, is a green ogre, who only likes life when he is completely alone, and who wants to live his days in peace.
Shrek becomes upset, when his swamp is invaded by all kinds of magical creatures. they have been evicted from the kingdom, by the very small Lord Farquaad. The local fairy tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man), settle in the ogre's swamp, and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey, played by Eddie Murphy, as they go to meet Lord Farquaad to demand his swamp back.
But Farquaad has other ideas. He's looking for someone to go on a quest for him. The mission, is to rescue Princess Fiona played by Cameron Diaz, from a fire breathing dragon. So he makes a deal with Shrek - rescue the girl, and he can have his swamp back.
Shrek agrees to the deal. But Fiona is not at all what Shrek thought she'd be like. And she has a secret.
i am not going to say what the secret is, as this would spoil this film.
well worth renting out.
Fabulous in every way. Great concept, superb animation, excellent characterisations from the famous 'voices' - it has everything for young and old alike.
Of particular note are the performances from Eddie Murphy & John Lithgow - both bring their characters to life in such a way that you forget that they are actually animated.
Beyond this, the intensity of detail in the minor characters and bit players just makes every subsequent viewing equally rewarding.
A must-see!
For some reason I had avoided seeing Shrek - it just didn't look like my cup of tea. But how wrong I was!
Shrek is a hilarious film, and the cast are just superb. Donkey is incredible! Few films make me laugh out loud, but this one did.
It was a wee bit slow moving at times, but not enough to distract your attention, or to impact the film.
Look out for the exploding bird - fantastic!
We enjoyed this film so much that we have put in a request for Shrek 2 and Santa has just left us our own copy of Shrek!
this film is one of the best ive seen in a long time, i sat there with amazment watching the tv. this film is a have to watch and a great family film.
shrek 2 is great but i think this 1 is even better.

I think its quite possible I would have enjoyed this film more if I had seen it when it had come out. Seeing it three years later though, it is hard not to put it up against the films of the Pixar studio, and it comes up short. While the animation is good (excellent in parts) it already seems quite dated and at times soulless. The four main voices (Myers, Murphy, Diaz and Lithgow) are all excellent and help to create some great characters but ultimately the script lets them down. There are some genuinely funny moments but these come few and far between.
I think my main problem with this film came from its lack of originality, which is something I was expecting. While on the surface, the animation style, dialogue and music (which was almost always fantastic) was obviously a direct reaction against Disney, ultimately underneath it ended up being incredibly formulaic. This comes across as a stylized, slightly tongue in cheek Disney movie, unlike the output from the Pixar studios who seem to have genuinely found their own path. Not a bad movie by any stretch, but disappointing considering the praise that has been heaped upon it.
I loved this film it was sooo funny.
Forget that the film is animated - it is as acceptable a movie as any real life film.
Eddie murphy as the donkey is inspired. As a 36 year old man i felt that i shouldn't be laughing as much as i was at a cartoon, but it is sheer brilliance. Being a simpsons man i would recommend this to all.
9/10
I thought this was brilliant. Very funny, excellent characters and quite moving at the end. I Really, really enjoyed it!
It is a fantastic film for all ages, even my gran was laughing at this one! If you dont love it, please see a doctor, im sure they can sort u with some medication! Action paked an hlarious, even karioke for you at the end! GREAT
This is one for everyone in the family. You will be laughing all the way through and for sometime after. At the time the technical advances for this film were incredible. The only film in this field to beat Shrek is Shrek 2. Can be watched over and over and is still funny everytime. Perfect cast, excellent script, incredible graphics. If you haven't seen either get them both now!
THIS IS NOT THE NORMAL TYPE OF FILM WE WATCH SO WE IGNORED ALL THE HYPE AND AVOIDED IT IN THE CINEMA. MY SON WANTED TO SEE IT , SO WE ORDERED IT FOR HIM. ARE WE GLAD WE DID. YOU ALL ALREADY KNOW WHAT WE DIDNT, ITS A GREAT FILM !!
Is it just me or is Mike Myers a comedy genius? Everything he does seems to just...well...work. This time out he is an ugly green ogre with a scotish accent that goes on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona (an equally good Cameron Diaz) from her tower top prison. All the kids favourite fairytale friends are here although not as you would normally see them. Eddy Murphy does his bit as the annoying chatterbox Donkey and helps the film carry its charm. The animation is fantastic and has to be seen to be believed. And there are songs too!! This is definately aimed at adults just as much as kids with the majority of the jokes going straight over my 4 year olds head. A must see.
