Alex Cox's riveting biopic tells the bleak, heroin-drenched story of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his disturbed American girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. Gary Oldman delivers a bravura performance as Sid, matched by Chloe Webb's grating, clearly unhinged Nancy. The two lovers' childlike tenderness with each other contrasts sharply with their bleak, violent nihilism, and while the script implies that Nancy's death was accidental, the line between intention and accident is deliberately blurred. By turns romantic and horrific, SID & NANCY is often grueling to watch, but always compelling.
This followup to Cox's cult hit REPO MAN was another critical success, showing that the director was as comfortable with reality-based material as with the satirical fantasy of his first feature. His romantic vision draws us in while throwing us back in time to London and New York at the inception of the drug-laden British punk era. The film's dreamlike style and a hypnotic score dramatize the schism between Sid and Nancy's world and the world around them--and the inevitable horror when those worlds collide.

This punk love story is an authentic, uncompromising insight into the obsession of Sid Vicious, who played bass guitar for the Sex Pistols, with drug addict groupie Nancy Spungen, and their inexorable descent into death. Co-scripted by Abbe Wool and Alex Cox, it brilliantly recaptures the rage, cynicism and self-destructiveness of the late seventies punk scene, while never setting up the rock 'n' roll lifestyle as a blissful idyll. Cox directs with an eye for the age and its absurdities, mixing gritty realism with moments of charming romance and black comedy. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb are outstanding as the lovers whose tragic affair managed to shock even in those unshockable times.
Some have said stimulating, most have preferred revolting. Consensus, an example of the dregs to which cinema has been reduced.
You can either do this kind of thing as a 100% accurate factual biopic or as an allegorical fairytale fable type thing - both have been known to work extremely well. What doesn't work however is mixing them up, seemingly at random. I couldn't work out at any given time whether it was factually incorrect to make a point or because of poor research or because nobody was that bothered!
Sid and Nancy is a film that loses nothing in terms of emotional impact or coherence if you watch it at 2x speed with the sound off.
a movie about sid vicious, which focuses not on the sex pistols but on his relationship with nancy. gary oldman is great, but only gets the opportunity to show his skills on a few occasions. nancy was in no way endearing. a good advert for anti-americanism.
British director Alex Cox has been speaking of his planned follow-up to his 1984 cult movie Repo Man. The original starred Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton and focused on their search for a 1964 Chevy Malibu with a mysterious cargo. Now Cox is looking for studio support for a sequel entitled Repo Chick, which has been inspired by the subprime mortgage crisis in the US. Talking to ScreenDaily.com, the maverick director said: "The repo business has expanded to everything from boats,... Read more
