This sentimental drama, suggested by John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, is set in a Norman Rockwell-esque small town in the 1950s and 60s, and tells of the friendship between the illegitimate, pre-adolescent Joe (Joseph Mazzello) and Simon (Ian Michael Smith), a dwarf with an answer for everything and a question for everyone. This film is one of the most emotional films I have seen in a long time. It tries very hard to pull on your heart with its delicate story of friendship.
At times you'll find it funny and there will be other times where you will cry. A film not to miss for anyone. I truly recommend this title for a great story on childhood friendship set in the 1960s.
Even the score really likes to deep with emotion and another great point about Simon Birch. Truly moving and something not to miss.
I would 'whole-heartedly' recommend this film.It made me laugh, cry and cry some more ! Anyone who enjoyed 'stand by me' would surely love this too-the storyline is very different but watch it and you'll see what i mean ! Overall, it's a very emotional film that really should be on a list of 'must see films before you die' It made such an impact, i'm going to track down the novel on which it was loosely based as this was deemed even better ! Hankies at the ready......!
