Magnificent

This is a magnificent opera in a marvellous performance (incidentally not conducted by Solti but by Levine). It is a shame this opera tends to be neglected. The story might at first seem a but muddling but only because some bits are left out. Now I know it it all makes very good sense setting up some of the most stunning opera scenes fully exploited by Verdi. The highlight for me is the duet in which Simon discovers that Amelia (Maria) is his long lost daughter. Sheer magic. But there are lots of other stunning highlights. If you make the effort to get into this you will be fully rewarded.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Visual Impact
By Seedyvee (183 reviews) from Grantham , 21 Dec 2008Great set designs create Renaissance atmosphere for this opera. Once Kiri Ke Tanawa and Placido Domingo are accepted as young lovers this music-drama builds up nicely and effectively. There may be not so memorable 'tunes' in this opera but the music melodically, harmonically and orchestrally captures every occasion and nuance of expression. That curtain design, however, is becomimg rather tiresome - time it was changed!- Was this review helpful to you?

Fine Verdi
By a customer from Norwich , 17 Dec 2008A splendid performance of a difficult opera, with a muddled plot - when Brahms heard it he could not make head or tail of the libretto. Verdi rewrote it with a magnificent new scene which puts the later acts in the shade.
Fine sets, although it is slightly disconcerting that the Genoese Senate is based directly on Venice's Palazzo Ducale, and production with singers who can act.- Was this review helpful to you?
