LOVEFiLM Review Sin City

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Comic artist genius Frank Miller and Desperado director Robert Rodriguez combine to bring Miller's searing, stylised vision of a torn, twisted city - and the people within it.

I dont want to hype this film too much as this provides more scope for disapointment. If you want to decide for yourself, all i'll say is go and see it. If you want to read my gushy feelings about this film, then read on! This has to be one the best films ive seen in years, probably sits firmly in my top 5 films of all time. The black and white with the colour spots is really effective at creating atmosphere. Its stylish, graphic, violent, sexy and fast. If you like films like pulp fiction, kill bill etc then see this movie. If you prefer realistic movies then this isnt for you, as its far fetched to the max. (being based on a comic) Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson stole the show for me. Mickey for his character - what an amazing, complicated character! Rosario, as she was the reason i went to see this is the first place, one of the hottest women on this planet! Im still in awe of this movie... I saw it last night, and couldnt sleep last night as my head was full flashing stylised snippets from the movie... remembering parts id forgotten and giggling to myself. It really is quite funny as well... some nice cheesy one liners thrown in here and there. Deffinitely THE movie of 2005, no doubt!

  • Brutality at its most magestic

Brash, brutal, twisted and stunning. A work of art even without the twisting, eclectic plot that keeps you gripped and riveted even if at times leaving you bemused. A must watch action, thriller paying superb homage to a twisted comic book genius.

  • Perfectly executed contemporary noir

Whilst Sin City is reminiscent of many films, it really is unique. It is a stylised noir set in a fictional, stylised city, with a stylistic mix of actors and comic book scenery. I use the word stylistic three times intentionally, as that is the overriding feeling, and could potentially be offputting,. However, I have no doubt the product is precisely what was conceived and was perfectly executed. I'm perhaps not enough of a fan of noir, but I can see how this could be the Pulp Fiction of its generation (in theme, style and twisting structure), and it is Tarantino-esque in its knowing execution of a genre piece (he directed one scene). It looks and sounds amazing. It is sassy and sexy and tremendously violent. I found it lacked a progressive plot, although this may be my failing as I can see how such a criticism could be levelled at Pulp Fiction, one of my favourite films. I also felt it lacked characters that one cared about, perhaps a victim of style over narrative in that regard. Not my favourite film, but very interesting and well worth a watch.

Fantastic modern take on the Film Noir genre with an all-star cast giving some memorable performances and relishing the over the top dialogue. Visually stunning and dark and gritty its a joy to watch again and again.

Where to start..... Its a graphic novel, its very graphic, surprise!!! Smooth sleek sexy and dark, fantastic cast, each with a story to tell ! I especially enjoyed the effects, the way it dropped in and out of the comic book style so easily! Finally I think it my duty to say..... Thank You Jessica!
