Another technological marvel that re-creates with great brilliance the look and feel of a comic book. The content is another matter, being sub-Mickey Spillane pulp fiction where men are thugs and women are whores and church and state combine in corruption

    Just watch this film!

I dont want to hype this film too much as this provides more scope for disapointment. If you want to decide for yourself, all i'll say is go and see it. If you want to read my gushy feelings about this film, then read on! This has to be one the best films ive seen in years, probably sits firmly in my top 5 films of all time. The black and white with the colour spots is really effective at creating atmosphere. Its stylish, graphic, violent, sexy and fast. If you like films like pulp fiction, kill bill etc then see this movie. If you prefer realistic movies then this isnt for you, as its far fetched to the max. (being based on a comic) Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson stole the show for me. Mickey for his character - what an amazing, complicated character! Rosario, as she was the reason i went to see this is the first place, one of the hottest women on this planet! Im still in awe of this movie... I saw it last night, and couldnt sleep last night as my head was full flashing stylised snippets from the movie... remembering parts id forgotten and giggling to myself. It really is quite funny as well... some nice cheesy one liners thrown in here and there. Deffinitely THE movie of 2005, no doubt!

    Guilty Pleasure

Liberal fingers have been levelled at this Rodriguez/Miller directorial offering: too violent, overly misogynous, no plot, all flash and no substance.

Which, as usual, is completely missing the point.

This is groundbreaking, rip-roaring stuff with a cast to die for and style in spades. Who says actors can't act without sets surrounding them? There's greenscreen a-go-go here and everyone does their job with aplomb - unlike the limp, technically similar 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow'. 'Sin City' IS a graphic novel on screen, and everything Rodriguez and Miller said it would be.

Yes, it's violent - sometimes butt-clenchingly so (how many characters end up losing parts of their genitalia?). Yes, it's misogynistic - female characters are either hookers-with-hearts, damaged waifs or damsels in need of rescuing.

But look at it for what it is: a comic, or graphic novel, brought to life. It's film noir to the max, with characters that are hard-to-like charicatures in a Chandleresque, hard-boiled triptych of pulpy stories. It has it's roots in the films and comics of the thirties and forties - a while before women were seen as equals in the eyes of men - where girls were 'dolls' or 'dames' and treated accordingly. It's stylistic, fantastical stuff - not a reflection of real life. And that's exactly how you should approach it.

Black and white with splashes of vivid colour, 'Sin City' sets a new benchmark. Willis, Rourke, Dawson, Del Toro and even Clive Owen excel in their roles. The three intertwining, overlapping stories - a la Pulp Fiction - are pacy, funny, gory and at times laugh-out-loud funny or toe-curlingly hideous. Gun-toting hookers? Samurai chicks? Beheadings, dismemberment, explosions and gravelly vocieovers? Love, redemption, gang warfare and cannibalism? All present and correct. Take this as it comes and you'll enjoy it - but be warned: Bridget Jones' Diary it ain't.

    unpleasent and dissapointing

I had been looking forward to this film and was very dissapointed. The style of the film is interesting but the actual story and characters are unpleasent and not very interesting. I couldn't sympathise with anyone and got fed up with the over the top violence and torture. I've read a few of the comic books and enjoyed them but they didn't translate well into the film. Overall I felt cheated.

    The best film of 2005

A great film, which looks amazing, and has a great cast, a good soundtrack, 4 interesting and entertaining stories, and some great characters. The movie is full of dark humour, looks and feels like a comic book, and is wonderfully violent. Also the thought and effort that has gone into converting Frank Miller’s Sin City comics/graphic novels into a live-action film is amazing. On the acting side of things, Mickey Rourke stand out as being great (and perfectly cast) as Marv, Bruce Willis plays Hartigan well, Clive Owen is mostly good as Dwight, and the rest of the cast are just as good and up to the task in their roles (in fact most of the characters in the Sin City comics are brought to life very well, and the right actors and actresses were chosen to play each part). Sin City was the best film of 2005, and also one of the best movies I have seen in the past few years!

    Incredibly gory!

A good film - but I wasn't expecting the sheer amount of gore that is thrown at you in this film. It makes Tarantino look like The Tweenies. Its a shame really, because if i'd have known in advance I would have been prepared for it and would have enjoyed it on a completely different level. As it was, I enjoyed the styling and photography which has painstakingly created to look and feel as much look a 'graphic novel' as possible. The script is corny and somewhat cheesy, but when you begin to imagine it is a comic book you appreciate that its been very cleverly written. Overall, an original and interesting film which I would have appreciated more if I had been prepared for the amount of violence in it.

    A sin to miss it

This could possibly be the film of the year. There's very few criticisms you can throw at it, and even if you dare try, the quality outweighs the former by the buckletloads.

Speaking of which, if you like your gore by the bucket loads you won't be disappointed. This is a movie full of anti-heroes, with flash visuals making it a completely unique experience.

The cast is immense, the script, if not completely coherent is astonishingly brutal, rarely relenting in order to catch breath.

This is almost a masterpiece, and would be if the three storylines intwertwined a little bit more. That though is the only real gripe.

It's a fantastic movie in a fantastic world - this is what cinema is all about. Watch and enjoy. Other comic-book adaptations have never looked so lame.

    Gorgeous and gorey

It would have been 5 stars, but some aspects were slightly lacking - 4 and a half, for sure!

The acting was exceptional, especially Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Bruce Willis. Wasn't too keen on Clive Owen, who didn't seem to embrace the cheesiness that the role really needed. Nick Stahl and Elijah Wood were chilling baddies. Really, made my skin crawl *shudders*

The cinema was packed, and I personally didn't notice anyone leaving. If they did, I think it may have been the violence, which was very graphic, but also quite unreal - being (mostly) black and white was a constant reinforcement for me that this was an adaptation from graphic novels.

So much imagery in it, and the choice of colour flashes was interesting. I definitely need to see it again to get the whole picture as too often I got lost in the beauty of it and missed nuances of the plot.

    Unbelievable

Never before has a comic been so faithfully adapted and in such a stylishly entertaining way that it demands respect, although it doesn't have to demand very hard.

Taking arguably the three greatest Sin City stories Rodriguez has shown that he has the balls and the skill to turn cinema into comics, instead of comics into cinema. You only have to watch the opening scene, the one used to convince Frank Miller that the concept could work, to be convinced that this is one of the most brilliant masterpieces of modern cinema.

The film pulls you in and refuses to let go. Don't be put off by the extreme violence and masochistic behaviour of the main characters. This is cinema at its best and isn't just for fanboys.

Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything...

    This is Art

What can you say about this after it has received so much hype. Is it worth all the hype? Well, all you really need to do is read the reviews on here. I must agree, the black and white images creates amazing atmospheres and highlights of colour provide a great retro feel. It is very Bloody and in places very violent, but nothing graphic as it is all very tastefully done, almost cartoon like. It really is a beautifully crafted film, cheesy one liners - yes, but it's all part of the appeal it is a comic after all. The only thing I feel is odd is the soundtrack, why is the music from the film not on the soundtrack? But that is just me being picky. It is going to be the film of the year and it is a must see at the cinema!!! You must watch this film.

    Rubbish

Not much to say about it. Was taken in by the tireless poster campaign. Never again. That has got to be one of the very worst films I have seen.

The visual style looks good for about 2 mins.
