THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI blame my mother for my affection for the MGM musicals. I have watched them since I was tiny and still find them throughly enjoyable. SIngin' in the rain being the best of the lot. A lovely parody of Hollywoods move from the silent films to the 'talkies'. This film has many wonderfuls songs such as Make em laugh (which is the same tune as be a clown from the Pirate!), You were meant for me, Lucky star, Broadway Melody and of course the title song. The cast is exceptional, Jean Hagen is wonderful as the screaching diva Lina Lamont, Gene Kelly as our talented leading man Don Lockwood, Donald O'Connor as Dons long suffering comic friend Cosmo Brown and a young Debbie Reynolds as the love interest. Cyd Charisse even makes an appearnce in the Broadway Melody section, showing off her dancing skill and fantastic legs!
The DVD content is pretty standard fare with clips from other MGM musicals, but the highlight to look for is the aniversary special hosted by Debbie Reynolds that gives more insight into what the film is parodying at how it was to play against such talented actors such as Gene Kelly and Donald O'Conner.
If you loved this film you will love some of the other MGM classics such as On the Town, Brigadoon, An American in Paris and The Pirate.
A good filmBy a customer from London , 24 Jan 2009
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI enjoyed this film, it was funnier than I thought it would be. It looked like Jean Kelly was wearing grey eyeshadow and too much foundation; he looked like he had been tangoed. The dancing was fantastic.
what a great feel good filmBy a customer from Morecambe , 22 Jan 2009What a great feel good film this is. I would never have dreamed of watching this film until I had to watch it with a media class. For an old film it is so well made and the jokes are timeless, people will always laugh at Donald O'Connor's make them laugh routine. It is s great film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon with friends and family and laugh the time away.
I would recommend this film to everyone 10 out of 10
